Tenerife is most populous and largest island amongst the seven Canary Island. Also, it is amongst the largely populated islands of Spain. It has a total area of 2,034.38 square kilometres (785 sq mi). The total number of inhabitants is 898,680. 43 % of entire population of the Canary Islands is present here. It is also the largest island of Macaronesia. Around 5 million tourists every year visitTenerife that is the biggest number of visitors in any other island. Not only this, it hosts one of the biggest carnivals as well as the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is trying to become a World Heritage Site. It has two major airports: the Tenerife South Airport and the Tenerife North Airport. It is the economic and tourism centre of archipelago.
The capital of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife and it is also the seat of the island council. This city is the capital of Canary Islands’ autonomous community which shares government organizations like the ministries and presidency. Between the years 1833 to 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the only capital of the Canary Islands till it was ordered through a decree that the capital of these islands must be shared as it stays in present. 0
The island accommodates the University of La Laguna,that was established in the year 1972. It is regarded as one of the oldest universities in the Canary Islands. A world heritage site, San Cristóbal de La Laguna is the second city in the island and ranked as third in archipelago. The city of La Laguna has also been the capital of these islands till Santa Cruz replaced them in 1833. Tenerife also has the Spain’s highest elevation which is a World Heritage Site that is the third biggest volcano around the globe from its base. Another thing which is located on this island since 2013 is Macizo de Anaga which is a Biosphere Reserve.
